Днем железнодорожника эта дата стала по инициативе работников Львовской железной дороги. Оказывается, именно 4 ноября 1861 года, еще во времена Австро-венгерской империи, на территорию современной Украины — во Львов — прибыл первый поезд, который назывался «Ярославом». В нынешнем понимании «Ярослав» был поездом международного сообщения. Он соединял Вену, Краков, Перемышль и Львов.
